STATEMENT OF BASIC PHILOSOPHY AND PURPOSE OF
           COLORADO YOUTH CITIZENSHIP AWARDS

We believe good citizenship is of vital importance to the survival and fulfillment of our democratic concept of government and the development of good citizenship among youth is of cardinal importance inasmuch as they will assume the responsibilities of government and our society in the near future.

We believe good citizenship among youth can and should be encouraged and developed,

The Colorado Youth Citizenship Award sponsors a threefold program:

HONORS: Rewards for outstanding citizenship, the winners will receive certificates and a $50 United States Savings Bonds along with a Banquet to be attended by Parents, Students and supporting members of the Community.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Students will be involved in a program of visitation (TOUR) designed to provide them an opportunity for direct exposure through dialogue with representative leaders of various segments of our society, such as business and government.

KNOWLEDGE OF AMERICAN HERITAGE: Encourage students to read outstanding publications concerned with American Leaders in History, such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Our Constitution, etc. and thus inspire a feeling of patriotism for the foundations of freedom.

There are no administrative costs so the monies received each year are used to pay for supplies, lunches for the field trips, and banquet tickets for the honorees and their parents. Recently, the cost has ranged from $75 to $80 per student per year.

With the exception of Savings Bonds from the Kiwanis Club of Denver, a small subsidy from Colorado Awards and provision of facilities, refreshments and transportation for the field trips from the Denver Public Schools and the Banquet facility by Johnson and Wales University, the program is funded by monetary or in-kind donations, or by donations solicited by the Board of Directors.

Obviously, donations are needed and greatly appreciated.

Nomination forms are available in the participating middle schools and can be prepared and submitted by yourself, your staff or any person in the school or community.

Remember, all donations are tax deductible.

The Colorado Awards Tax Identification Number is ID-85-0293005.
